altar

Our first annual member party was fantastic. We were so pleased with how many folks came to celebrate and the number of people who participated with photos of loved ones on the altar moved us. We will have a bigger one next year so mark your calendar.
Our angel Dianne constructed the altar for us. Our friend Sarah performed a reading from her book. Monica Esparza displayed her beautiful handcrafted guitars. Sr. Gonzalez and Sam’s kindergarten class provided some colorful decorations. Ricardo and Maria Ponce made authentic Pan de Muertos and sugar skulls. The young folklorico dancers warmed our hearts and the dance floor for the Ballet Folklorico Cachanilla led by Aida Guerrero.

Zinfandel Time
March 13, 2008

We are looking at a deliciously green springtime, and what a joy with this beautiful weather. Everything spring is underway, pruning IS done and the field looks great AND it is… Zinfandel Festival weekend in Paso Robles. We are going to open the winery for the weekend and hope our members show for a little Zinfandel action. This also is the call to the bullpen for your spring shipment. We will put the 2004 Zinfandel on Sale.

We are looking forward to showing off some really cool patio lifestyle fixtures from Leasure Concepts The guy does great work and he is very reliable. So prepare your Zin smile and hope to see you this weekend.

Catching up with the World better late than never
February 26, 2008

Its time I wrote to this site and kind of embrace this technology. This is Larry touching base with Bullpen members and whoever else is cruising this website. Our website is better than before making it possible to keep you up to speed with the goings on at Via Vega.
Harvest now well behind us was a great one. The wicked twists that Mother Nature spins always show in the wine. Lack of rain and stunting spring growth from last January’s cold spell scared the vines into small crop production. This brings wine intensity. Hard work was rewarded with some nice flavors.

It has been a pleasure meeting and greeting the tasting room appointments, and the response to the wines has been fabulous. April and I have traveled a bit promoting the winery and have again been well received. There is a group from our membership who are located in Nevada, and they have become much more than members. A group of intensely trained and experienced sportsmen and women opened their homes and captured our imagination. A bit of magic is what they have and their good will has placed them in the Via Vega Hall of Fame. A reminder that there is so much adventure in life if you let it happen. So that’s the good people sermon.

We have ourselves a bit of rain that is a good sign that farming hell is a good distance away. The grape vines needs to rebound from the excessive cold and dry seasons. This helps when I start to dream of the 2008 vintage I have to prune here pretty soon There is a chat about the weather.

Sam and Zin
Sam Gomez, assistant winemaker, testing the Zin

Merlot and Syrah are crushed and pressed! Larry is very pleased with the fruit quality and not surprised at the lower yields.

Cooler temperatures have us on hold for picking Zin, but it’s expected to warm up and we anticipate picking Saturday.

It’s crush time!
